How to Prepare for Your Family Photoshoot (Stress-Free Checklist!)

Simple tips for a fun, relaxed session with beautiful results

Family photoshoots should feel like joyful, connected moments—not a source of stress. Whether you're preparing for your first session or you're a seasoned photo day pro, a little preparation goes a long way in creating images you'll love forever.

Here’s your go-to stress-free checklist to help you show up feeling confident, calm, and ready to capture the magic.

1. Plan Your Outfits Early (But Don’t Overthink It)

Coordinated doesn’t mean matching. Here’s how to keep it simple and stylish:

  • Stick to a color palette: Neutrals, earth tones, or pastels photograph beautifully. Pick 2–3 core colors and build around them.

  • Avoid logos and bold patterns: They can distract from faces and emotion.

  • Add texture: Think knits, linen, denim, or layers—it adds visual depth.

  • Dress comfortably: Make sure everyone can move, sit, or play freely.

  • Bonus tip: Lay all outfits out together the day before to double-check they complement each other.

2. Timing Is Everything

I always recommend scheduling your session during “golden hour”—the dreamy light right after sunrise or before sunset. But timing also depends on your family’s rhythm:

  • Young kids? Aim for post-nap and after a snack.

  • Teens or night owls? Late afternoon might be better.

  • Outdoor shoots? Consider the season and sunset time when booking.

Try to keep the day low-stress by avoiding back-to-back errands or events beforehand.

3. Pack a Small Essentials Bag

You don’t need much, but a few items can make the session smoother:

  • Non-messy snacks (dry cereal, granola bars, fruit snacks)

  • Wipes or tissues

  • A hairbrush or comb

  • Water bottles

  • Backup outfits for little ones (just in case)

  • Small bribes or distractions—a favorite toy, bubbles, or sticker book

4. Prep Your Mindset (and Your Kids’)

Some of the best images come from in-between moments: laughter, cuddles, quiet connection—not stiff poses. Here’s how to show up with ease:

  • Let go of “perfect”. Embrace real moments and movement.

  • Talk to your kids beforehand. Frame it as an adventure or a fun game.

  • Don’t stress if things go sideways. If someone’s fussy or distracted, that’s OK. I’m experienced in rolling with whatever happens.

  • Trust your photographer (that’s me!). My job is to guide you, keep things light, and capture your family exactly as you are.

Final Thoughts

Family sessions are less about staged smiles and more about documenting connection. With just a little planning—and a relaxed mindset—you’ll walk away with a gallery full of genuine memories.
